war

I read this sonnet by W. H. Auden the other day and it stuck with me. "Here war is simple like a monument" is the title/first line. It's worth a read.

Here war is simple like a monument:
A telephone is speaking to a man;
Flags on a map assert that troops were sent;
A boy brings milk in bowls. There is a plan

For living men in terror of their lives,
Who thirst at nine who were to thirst at noon,
And can be lost and are, and miss their wives,
And, unlike an idea, can die too soon.

But ideas can be true although men die,
And we can watch a thousand face
Made active by one lie:

And maps can really point to places
Where life is evil now:
Nanking; Dachau.

Kaelum,

I haven't read the original article yet, but read the response just now (and I'll get to the first one when I don't have diapers to change which - in response to the response (!) - isn't actually so awful, you just deal with it and love your kid)and was a bit provoked in my spirit. Overall, though much could be said, it seems like it comes back to a heart attitude toward both singleness and marriage - not despising one and placing higher value on the other, not repudiating one and holding the other to be exclusively God's plan for humanity. One view is taken mainly from the OT, one is based almost exclusively on 1 Cor 7 - but both are Scripture, both are God's divine decreed will, etc.

All that to say, I think it's mainly attitude. Serve God, enjoy him, it's great to desire marriage without becoming sinfully obsessed, and it's also great to enjoy life wherever God has you, right?
